OBITUARIES A15 Arizona Daily Star Wednesday, April 18, 2018 FUNERAL NOTICES AROUND THE NATION mm vacy charge related to an extramarital affair that occurred as he was preparing to run for governor in 2015. Earlier Tuesday, Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley suggested the St. Louis prosecutor could bring another felony charge against Greitens. MARYLAND Newscaster Kasell ofNPRdiesat84 Newscaster Carl Kasell, a signature voice of NPR who brought his gravitas to "Morning Edition" and later his wit to "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me!" has died. He was 84.

NPR said Kasell died Tuesday from complications from Alzheimer's disease in Potomac, Maryland. He retired in 2014. Kasell's radio career spanned half a century, starting as a morning DJ and newscaster at WGBR-AM in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He spent a decade at radio station WAVA in Arlington, Virginia, going from morning anchor to news director. He was a newscaster for 30 years on "Morning Edition" until 2009.

Kasell then became the official judge and scorekeeper of the Chicago-based show "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me!" in 1998. He left his voice on hundreds of answering machines as part of that show's prize. HAWAII Rescue crews airlift hundreds after storm HONOLULU Hundreds of people have been airlifted out of dangerous floodwaters on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, but authorities said Tuesday that others are still stranded at evacuation centers. The U.S. Army, National Guard, and the county air lifted more than 220 people Monday and are going back for more evacuations, local emergency management officials said.

Thirteen people were still stuck at a shelter in Kilauea, a small town on the northeastern shore, said Coralie Matayoshi with the American Red Cross of Hawaii. "We'll be starting to do damage assessment in Kauai for the first time today, because the weather was bad and the roads were blocked. We couldn't do it before," Matayoshi said. Officials and crews are working to clear landslides and repair fallen utility poles, and state health officials have advised residents in some areas not to drink or cook with tap water as a precautionary measure due to a damaged main line. Heavy rains caused flooding and mudslides Saturday.

Wire reports BINGHAM, Nancy Lillian MISSOURI GOP leaders urging Gov. Greitens to resign JEFFERSON CITY -Missouri's top Republican legislative leaders abandoned fellow GOP Gov. Eric Greitens on Tuesday, calling on him to resign instead of continuing to fight allegations that he illegally took advantage of both a charity he founded and a woman with whom he had an affair. Greitens quickly replied that he won't quit and hopes to be vindicated at an upcoming criminal trial. Legislators could seek to force him from office regardless through impeachment proceedings.

I am mentoring a 12-year-old girl through the Big Sisters program. "Sandie" is agreat, strong-willed kid, but has been through the wringer, with a history of sexual abuse, her dad in prison for most of her life, serious poverty and her mom giving up custody (just to name a few).

This doesn't faze me; my question is regarding the kind of media she consumes. She has never had any supervision at all and has always had unlimited access to a smartphone and the internet. As a result, her favorite music is the most intense kinds of "gangsta rap," with shocking and horrible language. She loves horror and R-rated movies and her idols are all incredibly trashy reality YouTube Amy Dickinson teens with prison records. I am a total bookworm square and was raised in white upper-middle-class suburbia, so this was definitely new territory for me.

I know this kind of stuff can't be healthy for a little kid to be taking in, and my question is how I should handle it when she (regularly) pulls up her favorite videos or songs to show me. I have to keep myself from cringing. I want to be a good role model, and I do not want her to feel like I am judging her or putting down her favorite stuff. Should I gently say anything? Should I just FITZSIMMONS, Ann 76 of Tucson, passed away April 5, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 29, 1941 in Duluth Minnesota, to Donald and Stella Pierce.

Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel. O'HARA, Dennis Eric keep my mouth shut and nod neutrally? No Kid Experience Dear No Experience: Your mentor at the Big Sisters program might have specific recommendations for how to handle this. My view is that you should approach this the way parents the world over are forced to tackle media use, through paying attention and gentle inquiry, and by exposing this adolescent to more positive messages. When "Sandie" shows you something, you can ask her, "What do you like about this?" "What is it about Encourage her to interpret some of what she is consuming, instead of just letting it wash over her. You can also share your own reaction: "When I hear this, it sounds like they are putting down girls.

I worry that this language is not good for kids to hear, because it is violent and negative." You should also encourage her to express herself through writing slam poetry, rap, or whatever medium speaks to her. Fortunately, there are more positive media messages for kids to consume. (The reboot of "One Day at a Time" (Netflix) presents a great, funny, family positive atmosphere, where characters regularly talk about racism and class differences.) Most importantly, you two should do things together that don't involve media use. Sharing experiences will give you other things to talk about. Volunteering together at a Habitat for Humanity build or at your local Head Start program will widen her world and encourage her to develop her own strengths to help others.

Dear Amy: My daughter has been living with her boyfriend for five years. She has a very good-paying job, and is supporting this boy, who has not worked at all since he moved in with her. He says that he cannot find a job. My daughter has bought her own home (and put his name on it, too). He does not do any housework, yardwork, or anything.

She does it all herself when she gets home from work. He plays computer games all day long. I want to tell her that she should get him motivated, because I cannot keep quiet about this. It is driving me crazy. She is such a beautiful, hardworking and ambitious girl.

I know that she can do better. What should I say to her? Losing Patience Dear Losing: Stay out of it. Don't trash your daughter's partner. You have no role in motivating him. If she approaches you and wants to talk about this, encourage her to see in herself what you see in her, a lovely, smart and successful woman who deserves the very best in life She will have to get the rest of the way on her own.

Dear Amy: The question from "Anxious Mother" made my head hurt. We faced exactly the same situation with a teen son who was disrespectful and rude to us and who had a girlfriend we didn't like. We decided not to compromise our own standards, and told him he needed to move out. Their relationship lasted about a year, and we are still close. Survived Dear Survived: Many parents seem to relate.

South is in five diamonds doubled, and West leads a club. Declarer ruffs and plays a diamond to the ten, losing to the ace. Back comes a club, ruffed by South, and after cashing the trump king, declarer is at the critical point of the hand. His only problem is to avoid losing two heart tricks. He can do this easily enough, if West has the ace, by leading twice toward the K-Q.

But if East has the ace, this method of play fails, since a second heart trick would eventually have to be lost. Before broaching the suit, South must first try to decide which opponent is more apt to have the acc. This is not really difficult, since it's highly unlikely that East would double five diamonds unless he had the acc of hearts. South therefore leads a heart and, after West follows low, finesses the nine This works like a charm because West happens to hold both the jack and ten, so declarer loses only one heart trick. Considering the bidding, the nine is clearly the right play to make even though it requires a substantial measure of good luck to succeed.

But the fact remains that once East is credited with the ace of hearts, there is no other hope of making the contract than the deep finesse. North dealer. North-South vulnerable. NORTH KQ4 VKQ9 5 2 102 K6 WEST EAST 7 6 10 9 3 2 VJ107 VA8 8 A6 10 8 5 3 2 AQ974 SOUTH A8 5 643 KQ 9 7 5 4 3 The bidding: North East South West IV 2 2 5 Pass Pass 5 Pass Pass Dblc Opening lead jack of clubs. The key to good declarer play is the ability to figure out how the unseen cards are divided.

If declarer could see all four hands instead of only two, he would seldom fail to achieve the best possible result. The knack of determining how the defenders' cards arc divided can be acquired by anyone willing to take the trouble to assemble the necessary clues. In doing so, declarer forms a composite picture consistent with the bidding and plays that have already taken place.
