Leonardo as the new presiding judge for Pima County. Leonardo said Friday that he is looking forward to the new position, and continuing the work of former Presiding Judge Gordon T. Alley, who died Nov. 27 after a battle with cancer. He was 63.

"It brings a lot of responsibility, but also a lot of opportunities to have a positive impact on the courts and on the community," Leonardo said. "We want to be as accountable as we can to the public and we want to make the courts as accessible as we can to the community." Leonardo, 55, has most recently served on the juvenile court bench, where he moved from a post as presiding criminal judge from 1996 until May of 2000. He has also served in the civil division since former Gov. Fife Symington appointed him to the bench in 1993. Leonardo was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and attended high school there.

He graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1969 and cum laude from George Washington University Law School in 1972. Leonardo went on to work as an assistant U.S. attorney in hv diana, and later held a supervisory position for the U.S. Attorney's Office there. After moving to Tucson in 1982, he continued working as an assistant U.S.

attorney until he became a judge in, 1993. Leonardo has been a member of the Arizona Supreme Court Committee on Judicial Performance Review, the Statewide Superior Court Executive Committee, the Federal District Court Peer Review Committee, and the Federal Criminal Justice Act Appointment Committee. Deputy finds 800 pounds of pot in van said Deputy Steve Easton, a sheriffs spokesman. Easton, who said he didn't know the deputy's name, said that a van window was open and bales of marijuana were in plain sight A search yielded 55 bales with a total weight of just over 800 pounds, Easton said. Nobody associated with the van was found.

ARIZONA DAILY STAR A Pima County sheriffs deputy stopped for lunch Friday on the South Side and stumbled upon more than 800 pounds of marijuana, authorities said.
