STAR- EYEWITNESS STUDENT OF Alex 18, volunteers with patients By Inger Sandal ARIZONA DAILY STAR lex Vasquez is a soft spoken 18-yearold whose actions speak volumes. "I truly believe that Alex possesses all of the traits of a great student and citizen. Vasquez enrolled in Edge about a year ago as a freshman after being out of school for several years. But his determination to catch up on his studies and earn his diploma in 2005 is only part of the reason Tarlip calls him a "wonderful role model for the other students." Outside the classroom, Vasquez volunteers with Casa Gloriosa, an agency that offers shelter and programs to people affected by HIV or He AIDS, and provides community education in neighborhoods.

Vasquez got involved after his what's family moved to Midtown from South Tucson and he started talk- really ing to a neighbor, Ken Reeves -a important. man who became like a father to him. "He started talking to me about the Bible," Vasquez said. Reeves told Vasquez how he had turned his own life around and I started Casa Gloriosa with his wife, Johna, a few years after he tested positive for HIV.
