OBITUARIES A17 ARIZONA DAILY STAR Monday, July 8, 2013 FUNERAL NOTTCES UK deports cleric charged with anti-US plots in Jordan BRITISH MINISTRY OF DEFENSE Radical Muslim preacher Abu Qatada boards a flight bound for Jordan in London. He was deported early Sunday to face terror charges, and was described as a key al-Qaida operative. ByJamal Halaby THE ASSOCIATED PRESS AMMAN, Jordan A radical Muslim preacher described as a key al-Qaida operative in Europe rejected terrorism charges Sunday linked to alleged plots targeting Americans and Israelis in Jordan, his lawyer said, hours after Britain deported him to bring an end to a decade -long legal saga over his extradition. Jordan first submitted an extradition request to U.K. authorities for the militant cleric known as Abu Qatada in 2001, but it was blocked in British and European courts over human-rights concerns.

Last month, Britain and Jordan ratified a treaty on torture aimed at easing those worries, paving the way for the 53 -year-old preacher's deportation. Abu Qatada arrived at Amman's civilian airport early Sunday on board a British aircraft and was immediately whisked away by heavily armed anti-terrorism police for questioning at a nearby courthouse. Police sealed off the area as the convoy drove against traffic to the court building, just across the street from the airport. Armed policemen kept a crush of journalists at bay. After nearly two hours of questioning, Jordanian prosecutors charged Abu Qatada with conspiring to carry out terror attacks in Jordan twice once in 1999 for a foiled plot against the American school in Amman and another time in 2000 for allegedly targeting Israeli eastern industrial suburb of Sahab.

The military district attorney banned the publication of the prosecutors' names. Thiab said he will try to free his client on bail today. Outside the courthouse, Abu Qatada's father, Mah-moud, told The Associated Press that his "son is innocent and I hope the court will set him free." The cleric's younger brother, forahim, said he and his father met with Abu Qatada for 15 minutes in the prosecutor's office and that his brother "looked well and in high spirits." He said the three prayed together and that the cleric "kissed my dad's hands and feet when he saw him." He told them British and Jordanian authorities hadnotusedhandcuffs. Abu Qatada, whose real name is Omar Mahmoud Mohammed Othman, has been described in courts in Britain and Spain as a senior al-Qaida figure in Europe who had close ties to the late Osamabin Laden. Britain accused him of links with Zacarias Mous-saoui, the only person charged in the United States over the Sept.

11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and with shoe bomber Richard Reid. Recordings of some of the cleric's sermons were found in an apartment in Hamburg, Germany, used by some of the Sept. 11 hijackers. Brazil worried by report of US spying and American tourists and Western diplomats during new year celebrations. In both cases, Abu Qatada was convicted in absentia years ago and sentenced to life in prison.

With his return, those sentences have been suspended and he will receive anew trial. Abu Qatada's lawyer, Tayseer Thiab, said his client "told military prosecutors that he is not guilty of terrorism and rejected the charges against him." Jordanian authorities ordered Abu Qatada held for 15 days pending further questioning, according to one of the prosecutors. He said the cleric will be at Muwaqar a prison in Amman's south he was attending Brazil's top literary festival, expressed "deep concern at the report that electronic and telephone communications of Brazilian citizens are being the object of espionage by organs of American intelligence. The Brazilian government has asked for clarifications" through the U.S. Embassy in Brazil and Brazil's embassy in Washington, he said.

Patriota also said Brazil will ask the U.N. for measures "to impede abuses and protect the privacy" of Internet users, laying down rules for governments "to guarantee cybernetic security that protects the rights of citizens and preserves the sovereignty of all countries." The spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Brazil's capital, Dean Chaves, said diplomats there would not have any comment. But the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a statement saying: "The U.S. govern Anne D.

Phillips Universal Press Syndicate Data on billions of calls, emails possibly collected By Jenny Barchfield THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PARATY, Brazil Brazil's foreign minister said Sunday his government is worried by a report that the United States has collected data on billions of telephone and email conversations in his country and promised an effort for international protection of Internet privacy.

The Globo newspaper reported over the weekend that information released by NSA leaker Edward Snow-den shows that the number of telephone and email messages logged by the U.S. National Security Agency in January alone was not far behind the 2.3 billion reportedly collected in the United States. Now she has decided that she can no longer be my therapist. She has blocked my number and expects me to respect her demands. I know you can't speak for her, but is this normal behavior for a mental health therapist I no longer trust therapists. CONFUSED IN TEXAS DEAR CONFUSED: No, it is not normal behavior; it is highly inappropriate.

Your therapist appears to have had as many or more unre -solved emotional issues than you did. By ending your sessions together, she has done you an enormous favor. While you may not trust "therapists," it may require the efforts of another one to help you work through this When you go for your initial interview, be sure to tell the therapist what happened. ment will respond through diplomatic channels to our partners and allies in the Americas. While we are not going to comment publicly on specific alleged intelligence activities, as a matter of policy we have made clear that the United States gathers foreign intelligence of the type gathered by all nations." The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff warned Sunday that Snowden's overall disclosures have undermined U.S. relationships with other countries and affected what he calls "the importance of trust." Gen. Martin Dempsey told CNN's "State of the Union" that the U.S.

will "work our way back. But it has set us back temporarily." Patriota's reaction in Brazil extended diplomatic turbulence that the U.S. has faced from friends and foes around the world since Snowden began releasing details of the surveillance. DEAR HURT AND LONELY: When someone gets a post office box so that he or she can carry on a furtive romantic correspondence, it is cheating. When he kiss -es and embraces someone in a romantic fashion, that's cheating, too.

When he confides his deepest feelings to a woman other than his wife, what he does is widen the gulf between them. On the deepest levels, your husband has been unfaithful to you. It appears he has perfected the "art" of lying to himself in order to justify his behavior. My heart goes out to you. DEAR ABBY: I was seeing a therapist for several years.

I began going because of abandonment and trust is -sues. Over time we became friends outside of therapy, talking to each other several times a week. I trusted her completely. During our therapy sessions she shared her life and problems with me to the point that I feel I know as much about her as she knows about me. A couple of months ago, she suddenly decided that ethics had been breached and she was setting new how she missed my husband and "couldn't wait to feel" his arms around her and his lips on hers again.

She said he had shown her what real true love can be. She is 12 years younger than he is. My husband says they never had sex, but did kiss on several occasions, and he enjoyed their deep, open conversations. Because my husband is not a big conver -sationalist, that has been very hard for me The idea that he had meaningful conversations with this woman hurts me more than the physical things they admit to. He says it's not actually cheating if they never slept together.

I say, with everything he has admitted to and the fact he has opened up to her in ways I have begged him to with me, he has definitely cheated! This is the second time in our 16 -year marriage this kind of thing has happened. Obviously, his definition of cheating is not the same as mine. I say an emotional affair is almost worse than a physical one. He sees cheating as sex only. HURT AND LONELY IN NEW ENGLAND ZEE, Donna, 64, of Tucson, AZ passed away on July 5, 2013 in Tucson.
