Henshaw The Arizona Daily Star More than 3,500 whlte-shirted walkers on Mountain were visible from Interstate 10 yesterday as they blazed a trail against cancer. The number who took part in the Citibank Climb Mountain, Conquer Cancer walk was 1,500 more than last year's turnout for the fund-raising climb, officials said. This year's goal of $115,000 is expected to be reached when pledge money is turned in, said Maryann Smythe, public information officer for the American Cancer Society in Tucson.

The will be used for cancer education programs and to fund cancer research. Walkers were to collect pledges from friends, neighbors, families and businesses for every foot of elevation climbed. Mountain is 600 feet high, so a penny-per-foot pledge would equal a $6 donation. Walkers can win donated prizes for the amount of pledge money they turn in. Prizes range from a T-shirt for $25 to a pair of video tele phones if $3,000 or more is collected, according to the cancer society.

The sunny weather was perfect for the event, walkers agreed, despite an early morning chill. It was about 35 degrees when the walk began at 8:30 a.m. at El Presidio Park downtown and temperatures warmed to the 50s by 11 a.m., the National Weather Service said. "It was nice," said Alice Kurtz, who lives in Iowa but spends the winter months here. "Yeah, a perfect day," added Kathy Gatts, a business manager for O'Rielly Chevrolet.

The women had just come down the mountain. While participants agreed the walk was for a "good cause," some had very personal reasons for taking part in the event. Sisters Maureen Gray and Chris Anderson recently lost both parents to cancer, they said. Anderson had a photograph of their parents taped to her sweatshirt. Anderson, who is expecting a baby in March, works for Fitness Health Institute, 110 S.

Pat Villa, a co-worker of Chester's, said, "We sponsored Kathy and then she encouraged us tor come." Norma Moreno and Rosie Escalante, also Hughes employees, said they have friends and coworkers with cancer. On the way down the mountain, some people walked, some jogged and others took the bus. Florence deacon jailed on charge involving girl FLORENCE (AP) A church deacon has been given a 90-day jail term and five years' probation in exchange for pleading guilty to a charge of attempted sexual conduct with a minor. Elias M. Cota, 66, of Mammoth, was accused of having a yearlong sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl who was a member of his church. He was indicted by a Pinal County grand jury on March 24, 1988.

Cota told investigators he and the girl had been having a secret relationship for slightly more than a year prior to being discovered. The girl is currently enrolled in a Cochise County school. She said she hates the way Cota violated her trust in him and added she does not relate to men because of fear of future sexual encounters. Cota was also ordered to complete a sexual abuse counseling program and pay $440 in fines. Blast forces evacuation of Mesa helicopter plant MESA (AP) An explosion at McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co.

forced the evacuation of 40 workers from the plant's largest building. Friday's blast in a calibration lab was caused when acetone came iq contact with nitric acid, said Mesa Fire Department spokesman Mell Epps. No one was injured in the exph sion, Epps said. One plant worker, Thomas Holiday, was treated with oxygen at the scene after he ran into the empty lab and inhaled vapors from the chemical reactiori, he said. The evacuation was ordered because the chemical vapors spread through the ventilation system, Epps said.

Mesa Fire Department's hazardous materials team cleaned up about 4 gallons of the chemicals, Epps said. The explosion did minor damage to the lab but caused no structural damage to the two-story building, he said. 10 open skillet, the perfect piece to start a new set or add to your current collection.
