PAGE FOURTEEN SECTION A THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR SUNDAY, MARCH 12, 1961 Tucson Trails iji iwjiiii. muni in nwwwM- mn iimiiv ii.il mi fh I AHikers Plan Rugged, 3-Peak Trip March 19 mit. There is no trail. The most direct route will be 1.500 feet down the south ern Arizona at least once a week by some of the group. Josephine Peak is the least frequented place of the three.

According to an old register on top, which will be replaced by a new notebook in an aluminum, waterproof tube, only three persons have gone up there in the last year and a half. But these three were A-hikers. Perhaps a word here about why anyone in his right mind would want to do all three in one day. The only answer, and it is completely unsatisfactory, is that the hiker just wants to do it and without any particular ulterior motives. There is a good deal of bushwacking on this trip.

A fairly good trail leads from the end of the road in the Madera Canyon Recreation Area up to Agua Caliente Saddle, where the pine-studded north slope of Mt. Hopkins starts. It will be another 2,300 feet up Wrightson but it shouldn't be too difficult as the trail is excellent.

Nationally Known Nutritionist and Author Will Discuss the Priceless Gift of Living the More Abundant Life 1st NIGHT automobiles on the Apache Trail trip. "The cars of those days," he relates, "were not built for mountain climbing and they frequently had to be stopped for repairs. "But when one of those old gas buggies did start, we were in real trouble. Every time one of those engines cut loose, it scared the horses and we had a near runaway on our hands." President of the Salt River Project since 1954, Corbell still lives on the ranch near Tempe where he was born. He is looking forward to another important milestone in the progress of the Valley of the Sun: The Theodore Roosevelt Dam Golden Jubilee celebration.

But in some ways the 1961 trip will not match the one of 50 years ago in the mind of the Project's president. There will be no nights under the stars and no Teddy Roosevelt standing at the dam with a ready handshake. 50th Anniversary Fete Set March 18 Fifty years ago a 16-year-old Tempe youth stood by wide-mouthed and bug-eyed as President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated Roosevelt Lake and Dam on the Salt River. "Great things will take place in the Salt River Valley due to this stupendous project," President Roosevelt predicted. And great things have taken place in the valley because of the dam.

And great things have hapened to the 16-year-old-boy from Tempe. The lad was Victor I. Cor- bell, who now is president of the massive Salt River Project. At the time, young Corbell didn't pay too much attention to Roosevelt's predictions. And he didn't dream he one day would head the organization that has contributed to the area's prosperity.

Corbell was one of the few youngsters on hand for that rousing celebration amid the high cliffs lining the Salt River a celebration that marked the liberation of the Salt Riv Chichen Itza MONEY DOWN! From this unnamed saddle, the A-hikers will find signs of an ancient trail running toward the top of Josephine, which is only about 500 feet higher. Remnants of an 8 to 10-foot-high rock carrn will be found on top. It is similar to some others which still can be fpund on top of other Southern Arizona peaka. Probably the most miserable part of this hike will be the final bushwack of the day another 1,500 feet down the steep, brushy slope of Josephine Peak to the lateral-running Temporal Gulch trail, which leads back to Josephine Saddle and the main trail back down to the cars. The following bit of advise is not meant for the A-hikers taking this trip: Always remember to keep on the trail.

By PETE COWGILL The A-hikers of the Southern Arizona Hiking Club are an odd bunch, to say the least. They'll go on some of the darndest hikes with the enthusiasm of a near-sighted camera bug in a nudist colony. Several weeks ago some of the group decided to take a stroll from the end of the road in Sabino Canyon to Ortcle by way of the Palisade Ranger Station and Summer-haven. They made it, although one was on crutches for awhile and another picked up a slight case of valley-type fever.

Climbing Rincon Peak (a good, solid 20-mile round trip) sometimes proves just a trifle tame, so the A-hikers vary the trip by coming back down via Manning Camp, which is about six miles away on another mountain. These two may be just a trifle extreme as examples of what these hikers bite off on a typical Sunday. But on March 19 a fairly rugged but representative sample of the groups's activities is on tap. It plans on climbing Mts. Hopkins, Josephine and Wright-son.

This probably is not a hike that would tucker out Sir Edmund Hillary but it is one that will leave any but the strongest panting on the trail in less than an hour. These three major peaks in the Santa Rita Mts. are not strangers to the club's A-hikers. Hopkins, the first of the three to be climbed next Sunday is scaled every couple of months by someone in the group. The 50th anniversary of the dedication of the dam will be observed with special ceremonies at the dam site Saturday, March 18. And Corbell will be there. However, this year his trip is expected to be a lot easier and shorter than it was half a century ago. Fifty years ago Corbell had to train a pair of saddle horses to pull double for the trip and had to borrow a light spring wagon. Accompanied by two young buddies, Corbell pulled out of Tempe three days before the dedication.

The first night they camped out at Government Wells stage station and the second night they spent at Fish Creek stage stop. Friday night the boys pulled into Roosevelt and found camping space at a premium. They selected a big arroyo for their camp. Fortunately it was a dry night. well since last December. Grosvenor said hundreds of jade, gold and copper ornaments, charred fragments of rare Mayan fabrics, and even human remains have been recovered. The Mayans believed their rain god lived in the natural well. To placate him, they threw prized possessions into it. In times of drought, young warriors were hurled into the depths.

Although the well was dredged early in this century, the relatively crude tools used then missed many of the artifacts, Grosvenor said. The water, normally a uccp p.
