REMINGTON ELECTRIC ADDING MACHINE $20950 FETTERLY'S 191 E. Broadway MA 3-7561 Hemphill, NEW YORK, Aug. ifv-Ths gtock market Tuesday recovered slightly more than a third of the losses sustained in Monday's sharp break which was the worst since last November. Trading was less vigorous. An estimated two billion dollars of Monday's loss $5,400,000 in the quoted value of stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange was won back, based on the rise in the Associated Press average.

The overall gain was the best since July 21 but volume declined to 2.980,000 shares from Monday's 4,190,000, thus detracting somewhat from the significance of the re-' covery. Generally speaking, the stocks which have taken the worst losses made the best gains. This put the space age stocks in the forefront of the rebound as they have been hurt badly for five straight sessions, ever since Wall Street digested the possible import of the Eisenhower-Khrushchev visits. These "wonder" stocks advanced up to as much as half a dozen points or so. The pivotal stocks which make up the popular averages gained from fractions to 1 or 2 points.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 4.28 to 658.07. Monday it fell 14.78 in the sharpest decline since Sept. 26, 1955 when it dropped 31.85 on news of President Eisenhower's heart attack. The Associated Press average stocks rose $1.50 to $230.70, its best performance since it rose $1.80 on July 21. The industrials gained $2.30, the rails $1.70 and the utilities 20 cents.

Of 1,193 issues traded. 709 advanced and 288 declined. There were six new highs for the year and 23 new lows. Fourteen of the 15 most active stocks advanced. One declined.

The most active stock was Olin Mathieson, off l'i to 52 on 43,700 shares. Second -was Thiokol, up 2 at 45 on 41,100. Third was Avco, up at 13 on 41,000 shares. Next came North American Aviation, up 40, and Raytheon, up 3 at 51. Olin Mathieson was adversely affected by news that the Air Force bad cancelled a contract for operation by Olin of a tiigh energy fuel plant to be used in a B70 super-ionic bomber to be built by North American Aviation with an engine by General Electric.

North American erased an early loss as did GE. Both gained after the aircraft firm said its B70 program would not be affected by the cancellation. The market made its best gains at the start when traders leaped on "bargains" resulting from an over sold conditiornn Monday market. The ticker tape was late for a 15-minute period when prices were at their best. Thereafter prices softened considerably but a late wave of buying put the average up near its best of the day by the close.

Among the "science ficrion" stocks Zenith rose 6V4, Texas Instruments and Motorola 5 apiece, Litton Industries 2, Thiokol 23A and Polaroid VA- Parmelee jumped 4V2 following news of a $4 extra dividend. Motor Products was up IVi on a published report it is considering a stock split and dividend boost. Jaeger Machine was up following a small raise in the dividend. United Aircraft dropped l'i- It cut the dividend Monday and announced lower earnings. Other gainers included Du Pont up 5, Schering up Youngstown (ex dividend) 1'4 and Eastman Kodak 2.

American Stock Exchange prices also recovered. Volume was shares compared with 1,370,000 Monday. Fairchild Camera recouped 11 of the 244 it lost Monday. Active gainers included British Petroleum, Crowell-Collier, Occidental Petroleum and U.S. Foil Spotlight Stocks TTEW YORK.
