THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR TUCSON, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1970 SECTION PAGE ELEVEN "ALLEY allct BROTHER uur I OOP SO WELL, ITS MORE SHE, VOL) yEAH! TW FISHING'S I YOU'RE OF VACATION OUGHTA TAKE YbEEN fWnASTIC 1 Danny Thomas Returns-With Same Old Routine seems that daughter Terry (Sherry Jackson) and her soldier husband are headed for duty in Japan and plan to leave the boy with her husband's parents. There you have the plot for the opener. Danny winning the boy's affection with a new cowboy outfit and tricycle (although I'm not sure a child psychologist would approve of such an obvious and crass method of buying the child's love), Danny getting out of bed every two minutes in response to the boy's request for water, Danny exhausted and worn out after playing liorsie If I seem less than enthusiastic about Thomas' new show, it is because I am allergic to the unending, ham-handed bathos found in his brand of entertainment. By TOM RISTE StarTVWriter Danny Thomas is back with another TV series and if you are a Danny Thomas fan there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy ABC's "Make Room for Granddaddy." It has all the vices and virtues of every Thomas vehicle. Not only is Danny back, but he also returned (if just for the Wednesday night premiere) with all the old faces including Sherry Jackson, Rusty Hamer, Angela Cart-wright, Hans Con-reid, Mar-jorie Lord and Sid Melton.

There's also a new face Michael Hughes who plays Danny's six-year-old grandson. It TV HigMighh Frankly, everything is so obvious and overacted and everyone is so busy punching lines that it all seems sort of out-of-date for this fall 1970 season. Ah ha, you retort, but this is a comedy show! True. But so is "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" and this delightful comedy handles love and sundry other emotions with such skill and good taste that it leaves one with a glow of appreciation. "Dan August" also made its debut Wednesday night.

Although the opener' wasn't something that would send you off shouting hosannas, it showed enough promise to indicate that it should with patience from ABC) turn into a long-running hit. To begin with, "Dan August" has style and a sure-handed touch thanks to produ SAY, THATS A ST HVWvh! NOW WHAT'S feSO GOOD SOUNDS THAT OLD COOT POINS afg7TlsS 5 aiP'J-' few "Pull your own weight, doggone it or hit the road!" Anybody who's I (you're broke agajn.eh?) f' (POOR BUT HONEST) (POOR BUT v. yepTv 7 BE Vhonest is. vr TH' BEST a caV fcsr way to be VP o) icv Ny is poor but) KTS V- rS RT Ask Andy Andy sends a WORLD BOOK ATLAS to Chris Kile, age 12, of Rockford, Illinois, for his question: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A TORNADO DOESN'T TOUCH DOWN? Tornados form along wide, wild weather fronts, and where there is one there are sure to be others in the making. Fortunately, only a few touch down to the ground.

All of them dip down their whirling fingers, but most of them do not dip low enough to strike, thank goodness. People who live in tornado country hardly need the weatherman to warn them when to expect trouble. As a rule, they can look up and see tornado weather in the sky. As a rule, this type of sky is strewn with tattered blue-grey clouds with shafts of eerie yellow sunlight piercing through the shredded holes. Here and there a funnel of dark cloud dips down its wavering finger.

Channels are, it weakens and disperses before touch-down. Sometimes it almost makes it, bringing a wild windy little storm, often with pelting hail. This is bad, but nothing like the devastation that occurs when a tornado really makes contact with the earth. Copyright Chronicle Publishing Co. SOP OF i WITH A XSOPBKSTiTlOHS, cer Quinn Martin. It has talent and good looks thanks to Burt Reynolds. And it has a fine supporting cast thanks to Norman Fell, Richard Anderson and Ned Romero. There is also an appreciated touch of authenticity in "Dan August." Believe it or not, the night scenes were actually filmed at night.

And even more remarkable is the fact that Dan August is not protrayed as a brilliant one-man-against-crime machine. For example, when the ballistics expert was describ-bing the murder weapon to him, August admitted that he was not familiar with the gun. Another nice little touch seldom seen in similar shows. But even more important to the success of the new program is the manner in which Burt Reynolds plays Dan August. Reynolds has matured into a fine, very capable actor and his skill is obvious in every scene.

And the fact that he is, beyond doubt, the best looking of all the detectives currently seen in television won't hurt, either. 3 I WANTU I LUNCH llSiS -r SUMS A TX IU WAIT IN CARRIES CLEARLY jjJVOW!
