The Parkview began its long career as the Reid Opera House, showpiece for the top theatricals of the Gay Nineties. The story begins In the early spring of 1886, when the Arizona DailVyStar noted that "Billie Reid, of the Scotia Saloon, is building a new opera house on the site of the hardware store of A. D.

The agency, located at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, conducts test launchings of ballistic missiles at Cape Canaveral, site of the Air Force Missile Test Center. The agency produced the Redstone ballistic missile system and is developing the Jupiter intermediate range bajjistic missile. Karl Sendler, of the agency's missile firing laboratory, perfected "beat-beat" with the assistance of James R.

White, a section chief in the same laboratory. Although relatively simple, the system has proved its dependability many times. It utilizes continuous electronic signals flashed from the missile tn ground receiving stations. Its range extends hundreds of miles. Technically, Sendler defines it as the optical horizon.

The system is based on the doppler effect. For example, when a train blowing its horn approaches an observer, the tone of the signal appears higher. When the train moves away the tone appears lower. The same effect "can be observed if, instead of an audible tone, a radio frequency is radiated. In the same manner the frequen The grand opening of the new Reid Opera House was a gala affair for Tucson.

The theatre was decorated with fine new scenery brought from Chicago, and it featured gas lighting. The house was spacious 700 persons could be seated comfortably, and it could paek in 900 "without danger to the flooring," an advertisement of the day said. Theatre-goers brought their own seats, depending on personal taste or the state of their sacroiliacs; they paid for the space their chairs occupied. Members of the upper crust had private boxes near the stage, which they furnished to suit themselves. Over the next decade, the Reid furnished Tucson with many fine plays, concerts and minstrel shows.

By DALE PARRIS In the middle of the night the iecond floor studio-office of radio station KAIR, at 48 E. Broadway, seems a lonely and deserted spot.

But it's. not quite deserted, and there's little time for loneliness for the studio's sole nocturnal tenant, Disc Jockey Dave Lee. In charge of the station's program, "Night Dave begins his "work day" at midnight with a five-minute broadcast of late world Inews events. From that point on, he's caught up in a relentless cycle of announcing, record-changing, news editing, weather reporting and telephone answering which keeps him on the go straight through the night. Essentially, his Is the job of broadcasting music, news and sports for the listening pleasure of Tucson night owls.

A simple enough task, at first glance. Broken down into the closely-timed schedule he must adhere to, it becomes something less than "a breeze." For, besides the nightlong marathon of record playing, the "Night Beat" D. duties include six five-minute newscasts, six news headline editions, advertising, public service announcements, conduct of listener contests and a constant watch over broadcasting equipment audio' controls a job requiring the combined talents of newsman, elocutionist, engineer and "cool cat" musician. To keep up with the pace, Jockey Lee starts the race from a center position in the slot of a horseshoe-shaped desk, facing a panel of control switches and dials. On the desk directly before him is a microphone, and just above, in easy reach, a rack of the current "top A telephone is anchored at his right knee, and two turntables stand at each elbow.

Directly behind him, a wall of alphabetized bins holds an undetermined number of records and albums. Turntables on his left are used alternately for music selections, and the two on the right are used principally for recorded news openings, station breaks and other special effects. Busiest moment of the night comes with the nightly "Dial a Disc Mystery Tune" contest in which, listeners are invited to name the tune, or band leader, or answer other questions connected with the contest selection. Before the record has run a half-dozen turns, listeners deluge the station With telephone calls. Unfortunately for Dave, the calls don't stop with a winner an endless number of subsequent callers must be given the disappointing news that another listener was faster with the dialing finger.

Kuwatly Return Good For West Moderately Rightist President Of Syria Returns To Job In Capital, Damascus By REMBERT JAMES Military Editor The Copley News Service The best news to come out of Syria since pro-Communist officers seized full control of the Syrian army was the return of President Shukri Kuwatly to his capital, Damascus. Kuwatly is no friend of the United States, but he is no Communist either, although he has been a visitor to Moscow and often mouths had been expected to stall under any cfrcumstances before admitting the newsmen authorized by Washington. Otherwise there would anything too wild," Lee says. "In fact," he adds, "the current trend is toward an easier, quieter rock roll and even Presley, the acknowledged king of rock 'n' roll recently is tending toward the quieter, down-tempo tunes." Along about 2 a.m., selections taper off into standards, current "pops" and maybe a few jazz numbers.

Lee, himself, likes music that's bright as well as the softer style and, he says, "after all, our program is not to put people to sleep but to entertain them while they're awake." Despite close scheduling, Lee conducts the program with surprising calm. Quiet-voiced and temperamentally serene, he handles timing and unforeseen bottlenecks with apparent ease. Lee has been in radio station work for six years, most of the time on nighttime programs. He took his first radio job when he was 18, at a small independent station in Beeville, Texas, where his duties ranged from announcing and newscasting to sweeping the floor. Later he worked as D.J.

Now the question is how seriously Red China intends insisting on the admission of Communist newsmen to the United States? So far this demand Is still unofficial although it doubtless is approved by the highest Red Chinese authorities and there still is a face-saving way to drop it and admit the Americans.

Hong Kong newspapers are suggesting that Peiping is glad to have this excuse to stall or deny the entrance of the Americans at this time, when there are clear signs of stresses and unrest within Red China. On the other hand the Americans now gathering here represent a vast audience which Red China long has been anxious to reach in its quest for world stature. This gives the West time to plan countermoves and try to put them into effect. For observers who know the' workings of Syrian politics, the return of Kuwatly has still another meaning: Street fighting and assassinations are unlikely or, at least Kuwatly thinks so.
