1 I I I I ARIZONA, TUESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 26, 1926 THE ARIZONA DAILY' STAR PAGE Man and Mammoth Lived In Arizona 25,000 Years Ago, New Find May Prove. (Continued from Page One) skeleton. While the ordinary height of a mammoth was about 12 feet, it is likely that in the process of settling, the distance between the head and the feet has been considerably reduced. Implements Near By Two crude stone implements, known as hammer stones, were bedded in firm caliche and gravel close to the surface level of Whos mammoth's yards head. from One the stone head of the elephant, and the other implement was 200 yards from the head.

Both implements were 10 feet below the surface. Last week, a 12-year-old boy pupil at the Double Adobe school, in the Sulphur Springs valley, sticking out of the arroyo what he thought was a piece of petrified tree. He reported his find to the principal of the school, Mrs. A. M.

Boss. Mrs. Boss went down to the wash and picked up the piece, which she found to be a bone. She sent the bone to Dr. Cummings, with a letter inquiring whether the find had scientific value.

Dr. Cummings arranged for his seminar class in archeology to visit the and last Saturday the party began excavating on the bank of the Whitewater wash. The work of exhumation was continued from 3 p. m. Saturday until nightfall, and resumed the next morning until 4:30 in the afternoon.

The members of the seminar class accompanying Dr. Cummings were Dr. J. M. Anderson, of Davenport, Iowa: Mrs.

Jeane Hiland, of Los Angeles; Miss Clara Lee Fraps, of Tueson; Emil Haury, of Newton, and W. N. Wilson, of Boston. Yesterday afternoon, W. M.

Moore of Bisbee, formerly a locomotive engineer, took" charge of the spot where the excavation had been begun, having been employed as watchman by Dr. Cummings. Moore was able to take charge, pupils of the Double Adobe school took turns at watching over the site of the exhumations. The boy who first discovered the bone protruding from the bank of the wash, has shown great. keenness of observation during the excavations, and has told Dr.

Cummings that he intends to become an archeologist when he grows up. Two weeks ago, the seminar class of Dr. Cummings found two skeletons at a depth of 20 feet on the Empire ranch, in Pima county, in a stratum similar to that in which the elephant's head and the stone implements were exhumed last Saturday. From this it may be inferred, a according to Dr. Cummings, that the mammoth and the human users of the stone implements lived in the same epoch--an inference, so far as America is concerned, that heretofore has not been accepted by most anthropologists.

Answering some Questions about the Cord in United States Tires Q-How important is cord in a tire? -Cord provides the strength for the tire.

It is the framework and the reinforcement which gives to the tire its form and structure. Rubber saturates, insulates and webs the cords together and supplies the tire with its wear-resisting surface. 0-Who makes the cord for United States Tires? A -The superior cord used in United States Tires is made in the Winnsboro Mills at Winnsboro, South Carolina. These mills are controlled by the United States Rubber Company and have been, since 1917. 0-Why does the United States Rubber Comconsider it advantageous to operate its pany own cord mills? A--This is in keeping with the Company's policy of ensuring absolute uniformity and high quality in all the materials which go into its tires.

For the same reason, the Company grows its own rubber on its great plantations in the Far East. -Then, this cord from the Winnsboro Mills is uniform and of high quality? -Yes. These one-product mills use machinery especially adapted to making cord for United States Tires. The operators are specialists in their work and the entire energy of the mills is devoted to making the best tire cord that can be made. Q-llow is the quality of the cord assured? A--Tests are made at each step in manufacture at the mills.
